Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has ordered the immediate shutdown of specialized prayer facilities at Orlando International Airport after a state investigation found they were built and maintained with public funds for one faith.
The rooms, marketed as “interfaith,” featured gender-separated spaces, ablution stations, qibla markers pointing toward Mecca, shoe racks, and luggage cubbies. Reporting tied the original project to roughly $250,000 in airport spending dating to 2015, when officials added the amenities as Emirates began Dubai service. Critics called the design a de facto mosque inside a taxpayer-supported public facility. Uthmeier’s office investigated and directed that the specialized setup be removed. The airport confirmed the rooms in question are gone and said it will keep a single interfaith chapel open to all of its 58 million annual passengers.
The decision has been framed as a defense of constitutional neutrality. Public agencies have no authority to spend tax dollars or passenger fees creating dedicated religious infrastructure that privileges one tradition over others. Travelers of every faith already have access to quiet, nondenominational space. Building gender-segregated rooms with ritual washing fixtures and directional signs for a single religion crosses the line from accommodation into favoritism.
Working Americans should not be compelled to underwrite special religious facilities at government airports. Public terminals must remain open, neutral, and usable by everyone without diverting scarce resources to satisfy particular doctrinal requirements. Florida’s action restores that baseline: one chapel for all passengers, no taxpayer-funded mini-mosque, and no special privileges paid for by people who never asked for them. Other airports with similar dedicated ablution and prayer suites now face the same question.
