Henry Darby was the principal of North Charleston High School in South Carolina when he saw
families in his community struggling with food, unpaid bills, rent, and basic necessities.
So he did something extraordinary.
After finishing his work at school, Darby would clock in at Walmart around 10 p.m.
and work overnight shifts stocking shelves — sometimes until 7 in the morning.
Then he would head back to school and start his day as principal.
But he wasn’t working those exhausting hours for himself.
He gave his Walmart paychecks to students and their families.
The money helped cover food, rent, utilities, and other essential expenses.
At times, Darby was reportedly surviving on just a few hours of sleep.
Eventually, people discovered what he was doing, and his story went viral.
Walmart later donated $50,000 to his school after learning why he had taken the job.
He was already spending his days helping students build a better future.
Then he gave up his nights to make sure they could survive the present.
