BOOM. This is the kind of accountability American voters have been demanding for years. Non-citizens registering and attempting to cast ballots undermine the foundation of our elections. Every illegal registration dilutes the voice of citizens who follow the law, show up, and expect their vote to count the same as everyone else’s.
The Trump Justice Department is finally treating election integrity as a real enforcement priority instead of looking the other way. In Los Angeles, federal prosecutors charged Darwin Jonathan Rivera Flores, a Honduran national and lawful permanent resident who is not a U.S. citizen, with falsely claiming citizenship and fraudulently registering to vote. Officials say this is the first of more cases to come. Catching someone who put his name on the rolls under a false claim of citizenship sends a clear message: fraud will no longer be shrugged off in California or anywhere else.
Federal law already forbids non-citizens from voting in federal elections. Registration systems that make it easy to sign up without proof of citizenship invite abuse. When the Department of Justice investigates, charges, and publicizes these cases, it does more than punish one defendant. It warns others and pressures states to clean their rolls.
Secure elections are non-negotiable. Lawful citizens should not have to wonder whether the ballot box is being shared with people who have no right to decide the country’s direction. When law enforcement acts to protect that box, it restores faith in the system. Eligibility is not a suggestion. It is the rule. Only eligible Americans should decide the future of this country.
